Discussion Points

To get round the absence of official statistics on rape or sexual assault of over 60s women, Hannah Bows conducted 2 studies. First study examining sexual violence looked at the nature and extent of two sexual offences. Using FOI requests (freedom on  information)  HB collected data from all police forces in Eng, Wales and NI on rapes and sexual assaults by penetration offences recorded between 2009 and 2013 and analysedthe characteristics of victims and incidents. This study also involved interviews with practitioners and survivors to explore the other research questions.

The second study looked at homicides and again collected data from forces, this time all recorded homicides between 2010 and 2015 involving an older victim. HB used FOI requests to get access to this data in both studies
