  • Understand the implications for individuals of disclosing rape and sexual assault
  • Identify how to deal with a disclosure relevant to your role
  • Understand practice issues and the importance of self-care when working with rape and sexual assault

Working with Survivors of Sexual Violence who have a Learning Disability (1 day)

  • Understand society’s views in relation to people with learning disabilities
  • Understand how society’s views of people with a Learning Disability impact how they experience of sexual violence
  • Understand the different factors that people with a learning disability encounter when they experience sexual violence
  • Understand the effects of sexual violence on an individual with a learning disability
  • Understand the different factors that people with a learning disability encounter when they disclose sexual violence
  • Have confidence in receiving disclosures of sexual violence from a person who has a learning disability

Understanding Self Harm (1 day)

  • Define self-harm
  • Know ways in which people harm themselves
  • Understand society’s attitudes to self-harm and the impact these have on individuals
  • Understand the motivations behind and functions of self-harm
  • Know your our own reactions to self-harm
  • Understand practice issues and the importance of self-care when working with self-harm

Creative Ways of Working in a Therapeutic Environment with Survivors of Sexual Violence (1 day)

  • Understand how music, guided imagery and other art materials allow individuals to think creatively and explore their emotions
  • Know how to work creatively with clients using different forms of art
  • Know how to create a safe, non-judgmental environment to implement working creatively

Understanding secondary trauma and the impact on practice (½ day)

  • Understand the impact on professionals of working with trauma
  • Understand the impact secondary and vicarious trauma can have on you and your practice
  • Identify ways to address self-care when dealing with trauma
  • Understand triggers which impact professional boundaries
  • Identify strategies to minimise the impact of triggers affecting professional boundaries

Sexual Violence & Trauma – Introductory Training (½ day)

  • Define sexual violence
  • Identify the prevalence of sexual violence
  • Begin to understand trauma responses
  • Identify the barriers to disclosure and help seeking
  • Begin to understand how to support someone to overcome barriers to disclosure.

Self-Care for Professionals (½ day)

  • Understand the impact on professionals of working with trauma
  • Understand the impact secondary and vicarious trauma can have on you and your practice
  • Understand the impact of working with trauma on professional boundaries
  • Identify positive coping strategies for dealing with trauma
  • Identify ways to address self-care when dealing with trauma

Working with young people who have experienced sexual violence (1 day)

  • Understand what sexual violence is including sexual exploitation, institutional abuse, interfamilial abuse and peer on peer sexual violence.
  • Understand the vulnerability of young people including potential enhanced layers of vulnerability
  • Recognise the impact of sexual violence on young people
  • Recognise the pervasive nature of victim blaming and its effects on the victims and identify how to address this in your practise
  • Identify safeguarding dilemmas and their links to confidentiality
  • Identify how to deal with disclosures in relation to young people relevant to your role
  • Identify the impact on professionals who work with young people who have experienced sexual violence

Sexual Violence and Older People (1 day)

  • Understand the nature of sexual violence and older people
  • Identify the prevalence of sexual violence in relation to older people
  • Understand the context of sexual violence and older people
  • Recognise key differences in relation to sexual violence and older people compared to the accepted narrative
  • Identify the impact and consequences experiences of sexual violence can have on older people
  • Know what specialist services exist to support adults who have experienced sexual violence
  • Know how the system handles reports of sexual violence by adults
